Harmondsworth resident Tommy Thomas (93) is known locally for his amazing World War II service. He spent three years bravely flying over occupied France to collect mail and drop special agents. SHE asked if he would represent the older generation by ceremonially planting the first of 10 trees, an oak, for the benefit of future generations. The trees are the first phase of a long-term project to re-forest the Heathrow villages. Everyone is aware of the high levels of pollution generated by the airport, particularly road traffic, so introducing a substantial number of trees in the coming years can only be a good thing for local lungs.
